Libya Protests Trump Remarks; Yemen, Somalia, Haiti Expected to Follow

Libya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires on Sunday to protest what it described as offensive remarks made by President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Georgia. Trump had referred to Libya, Yemen, Haiti, and Somalia as "shithole countries" and "infested with terrorism."

The ministry stated its rejection of any statements that "undermine the dignity of its people or diminish their standing," expressing its condemnation of Trump's comments regarding Libya.

In a related development, rival authorities in both eastern and western Libya denounced the American statements, refusing to have the country's name drawn into electoral disputes. This stance reflects a broad Libyan objection to the U.S. President's characterization.

The Yemeni and Somali governments, along with Haiti's government, are expected to take similar diplomatic steps to protest Trump's remarks, mirroring Libya's action and rejecting the insults directed at their respective populations. However, no official confirmation of such steps has been issued to date.

Trump had stated during the campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, that U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff sponsored legislation to bring immigrants from countries he described as "infested with terrorism," specifically naming Libya, Yemen, Haiti, and Somalia, before calling them "shithole countries."
