Taiz Central Prison Director Detained Over Prisoner Transfers
The Public Prosecution in Taiz Governorate has detained the director of the Central Correctional Facility, Colonel Issam Al-Kamil, pending an investigation into allegations of illegally transferring prisoners without judicial approval.
Local sources reported that the detention order was issued following the discovery of unauthorized transfers and releases of inmates accused of serious crimes. These actions have raised significant questions regarding their legality and the directives that authorized them.
The provincial police chief referred Al-Kamil and several other prison officials to the Public Prosecution for investigation. The prosecution subsequently issued arrest warrants for some individuals responsible for the facility's operations to facilitate the ongoing inquiry and determine accountability.
Sources indicated that prisoners were moved at night to alternative locations, including Al-Nahda and Bakthir schools, amidst confrontations in areas surrounding the prison. The transfer process reportedly lacked essential equipment and supplies, leading to difficult conditions for the inmates.
Furthermore, two inmates, Wijdan Al-Sufi and Mukhtar Faze', were reportedly released from their cells two days after the transfer, despite facing charges for grave offenses. Reports also surfaced of approximately 11 inmates escaping from the Al-Nahda school prison last Thursday. These developments have prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances and the prosecution of those responsible.
